1 The sons of Reuben, the eldest son of Israel: for he was the eldest. But because he defied his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, and so he is not reckoned unto the birthright. 2 For unto Judah which was mighty among his brethren, was given the principality before him. But the birthright was given Joseph. 3 The sons then of Reuben the eldest son of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. 4 The sons of Joel: Shemaiah, and his son Gog, and his son Shimei, 5 and his son Micah, and the son of him was Reaiah, and his son was Baal, 6 and Beerah was his son. Which Beerah, Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, carried away: for he was a great lord among the Reubenites. 7 But unto his brethren in their kindreds, when they are reckoned after their birth, were Jeiel and Zechariah the chief heads. 8 And Bela the son of Azaz the son of Shema the son of Joel, dwelt in Aroer and so forth unto Nebo and Baalmeon. 9 And eastward he inhabited until the wilderness, even upon the river Euphrates, for their cattle was much in the land of Gilead. 10 And in the days of Saul they warred with the Hagrites which were overthrown by their hands. And they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of Gilead.
11 And the Children of Gad dwelt over against them in the land of Bashan, even unto Salecah. 12 And in Bashan, Joel was the chiefest and Shapham the next, then Janai and Shaphat. 13 And their brethren, in the ancient households of them, were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber, seven. 14 These were the children of Abihail the son of Huri the son of Jaroah Gilead the son of Michael the son of Jeshishai the son of Jahdo the son of Buz. 15 Ahi was the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, the head of an ancient household among them. 16 And they dwelt in Gilead and in Bashan and her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, even unto the end of their borders. 17 And they were all reckoned by kindreds in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
18 The sons of Reuben of Gad and of half the tribe of Manasseh, even of fighting men able to bear shield and sword, and shoot with bow, and taught to make war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and three score that went out to battle. 19 And they fought with the Hagrities and with Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites were delivered into their hands with all that were with the Hagrites. For they cried to God in their battle, and he heard them, because they trusted to him. 21 And they took of their cattle fifty thousand camels, and two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand asses, and of the people a hundred thousand: 22 for there fell many dead because the war was of God. And they dwelt there in their steads until the time that they were carried away.
23 And the children of half the tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land, from Bashan unto Baalhermon and Senir and unto mount Hermon, and they were many. 24 And these were the heads of the ancient households of them: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, Jahdiel, men of great power, men of name and heads of the ancient households of them. 25 But when they had transgressed against the God of their fathers and had gone awhoring after the gods of the people of the land, which God destroyed before them, 26 God stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, and carried away the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, Habor, Hara and to the River Gozan, where they remain unto this day.
